Trade winds on the front nine

Why a lower ball flight wins on windward courses.

· Kenji Arakaki

The trade winds blow from the northeast on most days. On the windward side of the island, they arrive at the course with little to slow them.

A ball hit high is pushed around. One hit lower, with less spin, stays on line longer. The difference is a few degrees of launch angle.

What we test

We compare your normal setup to one with a slightly lower loft and a lighter shaft. If distance does not suffer, we recommend the lower option.

It is not a magic cure, but it is real.
